By way of the elderly I recently came into possession of a 2003 vintage Dell Dimension 2400. This baby comes complete with Intel Pentium 4 at 2.2GHz, with a whopping 256MB of RAM, and a 40GB Hard drive. Lucky me, it has 6 USB 2.0 ports; such speed is shocking for a Dell. Complete with fingerprinted CRT monitor, ball mouse, and a pleasant keyboard, however no speakers.
So how can this 6 year old PC be of use to me? Find out after the jump.
WOW. Ive recently been trying out Windows 7 on a few computers. A virtual machine on my MacBook, and 1.6 P4 that had horrible graphics (800×600) and finally a laptop that I have managed to unearth. This baby is a Presario 2500 Series, with a 2.4GHz P4 and 768MB of RAM. It only has a 14.1″ screen at 1024×768, and what once was a decent JBL sound system.
7 Installed smoothly- too smoothly for a typical Microsoft product, which leads me to believe that it was stolen from aliens.
With the launch of the DSi just around the corner (April 5 for those of you who don’t keep up to date with the latest gadgets) the question was going to be brought up at some point: Should I get a new DS, again? Well, if you have an original DS, let me save you the time of reading the rest of the post and answer your question in a single word: YES! If you have a DS Fat, first, don’t be too ashamed, and second, scrounge up $170 pre-tax and the sleeping bag, and wait outside of your nearest store, as you will no longer have to hide your DS from all your cooler friends. For the rest of you, read on after the jump. (more…)
There are rumors going around that speak of a new video-on-demand service that is to provided by Apple. It would be an extension of the iTunes ecosystem and would supposedly allow one to purchase video content on iTunes and then, instead of downloading it and having to store it, would allow one to simply stream the content over the internet at any time. This is may sound like similar services already provided, such as Netflix Watch it Instantly, what purposedly allow streaming through devices such as an Apple TV, or even an iPhone, not just a web browser or special device like Netflix. This would solve the storage issues of those devices, as it would eliminate the need to store video content. It is not clear whether the service would be free to existing users or would require a monthly payment, nor is it clear when Apple would announce such a service.
Macworld 2009 has come and past this year, and I wouldn’t blame you if you never read about it. To answer the question I posed in the title, it was a bust with almost no product announcements at Apple’s final Macworld. But don’t think that products were the only things absent from Macworld, because so was Steve Jobs, the CEO and co-founder of Apple. Traditionally the keynote speaker, he was absent this year to continue ongoing treatment for a hormone imbalance. The major products announced were iLife 09, iWork 09, a new 17 in. Macbook Pro, and multiple changes to iTunes. Read more details on them after the break.
Wow. I fixed my apple cinema display that I bought broken on eBay, and I found that it turned out being higher resolution and better quality than expected. This display even has small pressure marks, which are invisible without a dark background. That may be a downfall of used equipment, but for what i paid, i was expecting more damage.
I may upload some pictures to come, but right now it is not where I am, and i am working on another project.
Anybody have suggestions on what to do with a Dell Axim x51v? It has serial and windows mobile 2005 (with a nice little 625MHz processor), as well as bluetooth and WiFi, so if i could obtain a serial based servo controller or relay board, some form of WiFi controlled application to link the two together with a web interface, and the chassis of a robot, i would have myself a robot.
Well. If I do say so myself, I feel that we did indeed have a very productive Christmas and a very Happy Holiday season. So here I find myself on the eve of the New Year. The last day of the wondiferous 2008. I find myself looking at my stuff. That is all it is really, stuff: But nonetheless I look at it. There is much, much more- click through.
First off i would like to put up an image that i drew on Monday in drafting. I thhink its pretty hilarious, however you may find it offensive. So if you do, you can leave.
I thought that i had lost this, however i found it on the floor of my room just a few minutes ago and scanned it.
Next: the CERN stuff. And protons.
That is the CERN rap that is pretty friggin informative while still retaining hilarity.
Somewhat like myself.
I have to say, i am recently more and more frequenting HowardForums.com and reading about data tethering with Boost Mobile and ATT wireless. Both of these are PayAsYouGo, which is FABULOUS so i dont fudge up my family’s wireless bill. I went ahead and bought two Boost Mobile phones on Ebay for $19.25 total. I also bought a SIM card on ebay for $6.something that has $5 worth of credits to use with the phones i bought. I am so cought up in this tethering craze i am driving my friends crazty with the talk of 3G and iDEN and Data Cable and tethering and Cellular. Although I did promise Patrick one of the two phones that i won on Ebay. It would be fun to use Mologogo on them so we could chat and see current locations and such. Too bad all my friends arent tech heads, or else we could have one big Mologogo orgy (define:orgy returend “any act of immoderate indulgence; “an orgy of shopping”; “an emotional binge”; “a splurge of spending” on Google so totally non-sexual) if you will.
To further my point about my craze here is an email that i just sent to Patrick. Click the read link to read more!
On the 11th of July, apple released a revolutionary application distribution system for the iPhone and iPod touch markets. It’s called “The App Store” and it is utterly fabulous(TM)!!!! I am typing this post on my first gen iPhone using the recently released WordPress application for iPhone. Overall
the app store experience is very similar to the iTunes store shopping experience. You can search, browse, and view features applications. To purchase, you use your existing itunes store account. Applications are then downloaded directly to the iPhone or iPod touch or similarly if you purchase them using iTunes on your computer they are downloaded to your Mac or PC, and then synced to the iPhone or iPod touch the next time you plug your device in using USB.
I have had a decent experience with MobileMe so far. The only problems that I have faces are the fact that upon the transfer of account information form computer to iPhone that your me.com account is entered as a mac.com email address and therefore you are left with the inability to send emails. To rectify this you must delete the account from the iPhone and re-add it. The other gripe that I have Is that you cannot share calendars with other members of MobileMe. That’s all for now. Going into costco.!!
Well, people, today is the day.. or at least the rumored release day for the Apple iPhone and iPod Touch firmware 2.0, including the App store, multiple message deletion, image saving, and all the other goodies, such as Exchange support. I can tell you that i am anticipating this release, with my Exchange server setup, and my craving for official apps from the app store. Lets all cross our fingers and hope for the greatest amazing amazingness to happen today. That is the 2.0 release.
Here are some blogs that you can watch for up-to-date news. Go ahead, click them all, you know you want to. They will all open in a new window so you will not be distracted from the fabulous ™ content on this site.
So, if you have an iPhone then rejoice with me. As soon as the 2.0 firmware is released, i plan to un-jailbreak and upgrade… Or wait until someone *ahem* who has a jailbroken device does the upgrade straight, sans restoring. Woohoo!
WWDC, the Worldwide Developers Conference, is a conference held by Apple every June at the Moscone Center. Apple regularly uses this event to showcase new products and software from the company. This year, Apple used the event to preview and announce many new products and software. These announcements were the iPhone 3G, Mobile Me, OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, and provided updates of the iPhone SDK, iPhone OS 2.0, and the App Store. Learn more after the break.
Today (2/26) Apple released new versions of it Macbook and Macbook Pro line. They are all simply undates to things such as processor speed and hard drives but they are still signficant none the less. In detail, there are faster processor speeds across the board as well as more hard drive space. There are also some new features such as the new multitouch trackpad for the Pros and a new LED backlight option is availible for the 17 incher. As you can see, the updates are mostly minor and don’t deal with the aesthtic sense of the machines. In other news, Apple also released firmware version 1.1.4 for it’s iPhone and iPod Touch products. The updates, while large at around 150 MB, are said to do very little to the overall experience and are thought to exist to simply “pave the way” to the soon to be released SDK.
The iPhone will be launching in Germany by T-Mobile for 399 euros on Novenmber 9 just like its UK counterpart. It will also be the same model as in America and by the end of 2007 T-Mobile hopes to have EDGE coverage over all of its current phone coverage areas. The phone will also retain all of its uses as in America. The following quote is from one of our admins, Scott, “I hope those damn Germans are happy”.
Intel’s announced USB 3.0 specification could possibly achieve throughput beyond 4Gbps! This would use the same connector as a standard USB cable, however- the USB 3.0 cable would be laced with a magical optical link and will (for serious this time) have a max length of 2 Meters.
Meanwhile, a 1Gbps throughput is being targeted with Ravencraft’s jewel: Wireless USB 1.1. Although with existing 480Mbps Wireless USB only achieving about 40Mbps average, Intel would be smart to focus on the mechanics instead of the glamour. Unfortunately, it’s all just a crock of sh** until they deliver, but with Apple running Intel inside now, Sony putting USB in their camcorders (who uses that?), and eSATA being utilized for external disks… My beloved Firewire’s days sure seem numbered!
Today in London Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple,Inc., announced that the iPhone will be landing in the UK on Nov. 9 for 269 euros. This will not be a 3G phone like once rumored. The plans for the phone, which will be provided by the company 02, will be similar to the plans on AT&T and will be similarly priced. Our senior admin, Scott, has the following to say about this development, “I hope those damn Europeans are happy”.
A certain Scott Vanderlind has recently come into possession an Apple Bluetooth Headset. This would normally cost $129 as a suggested retail price, but due to Scott being the savvy consumer he is, purchasing an iPhone before the price drop, he recieved a $100 store credit which then reduced the price to a mere $29(without tax). Scott says the following concerning his new headset, “I like it and think it is great. It has picturesque clarity and an unbeatable design”.
