iTunes Replay?

February 12th, 2009

itunes-logo

There are rumors going around that speak of a new video-on-demand service that is to provided by Apple. It would be an extension of the iTunes ecosystem and would supposedly allow one to purchase video content on iTunes and then, instead of downloading it and having to store it, would allow one to simply stream the content over the internet at any time. This is may sound like similar services already provided, such as Netflix Watch it Instantly, what purposedly allow streaming through devices such as an Apple TV, or even an iPhone, not just a web browser or special device like Netflix. This would solve the storage issues of those devices, as it would eliminate the need to store video content. It is not clear whether the service would be free to existing users or would require a monthly payment, nor is it clear when Apple would announce such a service.

Google Adsense

February 12th, 2009

Well we finally did it.  We finally got Adsense on STRB.  It took a while (look back in the archives to see how long) but they are now up.  Here’s to hoping they don’t annoy you too much and get us money.

PS.  Let’s also hope they stop giving us links to things like weight loss, or tell us we need to unrestrict our cookies to get a free iPhone.

Plea to Public from Patrick

My dream, all-in-one computing.

my dream, all-in-one computing.

My Mom recently put her computer into my room (I am writing this on her computer right now) and that is all fine and dandy, but I think that it could use an upgrade. Not that the computer isn’t perfectly fine, but there is always room for improvement. The computer runs fine, I want more along the lines of a cosmetic upgrade, both on the hardware and software. She currently has a Dell computer, and they are most definitely not known for their looks. Whether it is the large amount of cables, the placement of all the USB ports on the back of the computer, or the odd angles of everything, it is not a very pretty setup. I told her she should get an iMac, one of the most elegant computers out there. With this she could combine her less than inspired Inspiron tower, the needlessly complicated speakers, and the boring, industrial-styled monitor for into 1 simple brushed aluminum and glossy glass enclosure. She would she a huge reduction of cables, and also a massive increase of speed, considering the switch from Vista to OS X. Plus, I also told her to upgrade to a wireless keyboard and mouse for $50, just to cut those 2 cables. The keyboard especially would be welcomed, as this keyboard I am typing on now is not only downright ugly, but also has clumsily designed keys that make it difficult to type on. On top of the upgrades to what this computer already has, she would also then gain things she doesn’t have, like bluetooth and wifi, and OS X would mean a far superior computing experience. So join the cause and express your intent to help me by writing “Yes we can!” in the comments!

For some reason, he has not yet gone away. After being asked about running for office one day he said, “I don’t know if the American public deserves me.”

Wow.

Windows 7: Just as bad as the original… so far.

January 22nd, 2009

So, I couldn’t do it.  I could not use Windows 7 for everything. Multiple factors could have influenced this, but what it surmounts to is that there is a lack of Flash support, a lack of working audio, and a lack of support for pretty much everything else that I do.

Oh well. Maybe by the time it hits retail it will be better. It also just may be that I cannot stand to not use my precious Apple products. That must be it.

When Patrick buys a netbook, he can give it a whirl, because he is used to Vista.

Photoshoot!: Aretha Keller Edition

January 20th, 2009

Here we have a perfect example of Patrick. Being racially insensitive. Here he his, wearing Aretha’s hat (albeit a cheap knockoff) and some dark glasses, pretending to be Helen Keller. Be ashamed, be very ashamed.

Macworld 09: Boom or Bust?

January 11th, 2009

apple-logo

Macworld 2009 has come and past this year, and I wouldn’t blame you if you never read about it.  To answer the question I posed in the title, it was a bust with almost no product announcements at Apple’s final Macworld.  But don’t think that products were the only things absent from Macworld, because so was Steve Jobs, the CEO and co-founder of Apple.  Traditionally the keynote speaker, he was absent this year to continue ongoing treatment for a hormone imbalance.  The  major products announced were iLife 09, iWork 09, a new 17 in. Macbook Pro, and multiple changes to iTunes. Read more details on them after the break.

Return to Posting

January 10th, 2009

I am here to announce that I will return to posting. One of my new years resolutions (there are 10 of them) is to post more on STRB, so I will. And that doesn’t include posting crap, so expect to be intrigued by my mind-bending reality distorting, thought provoking, racy, controversial postings that push the envelope on what can and cannot be posting on this site.

23″ Cinema looks bigger than expected; Robots expected to dominate Earth.

January 8th, 2009

Wow. I fixed my apple cinema display that I bought broken on eBay, and I found that it turned out being higher resolution and better quality than expected. This display even has small pressure marks, which are invisible without a dark background. That may be a downfall of used equipment, but for what i paid, i was expecting more damage.

I may upload some pictures to come, but right now it is not where I am, and i am working on another project.

Anybody have suggestions on what to do with a Dell Axim x51v? It has serial and windows mobile 2005 (with a nice little 625MHz processor), as well as bluetooth and WiFi, so if i could obtain a serial based servo controller or relay board, some form of WiFi controlled application to link the two together with a web interface, and the chassis of a robot, i would have myself a robot.

Usefulness of the “Obsolete”

January 4th, 2009

I consider myself a consumer. A big, fat, carbon-emitting consumer. Some may say that my purchasing habits are dangerous, to myself and the ones around me. Well, I have to tell you that my habits are no worse than your mothers. Oh, ka-zing! When I buy a computer, I usually buy it used. When I buy some peripherals, (like a monitor, an iSub) I usually buy them used as well, saving the environment much carbon.

I came upon this question this morning, as I was using my latest acquisition. How do I define the usefulness of old tech? Of the obsolete?

Windows 7: Define “Home Run”…

January 3rd, 2009

Well, here I am. Beginning my new years resolution of posting twice per month.. This time about Windows 7.

I am doing some beta testing of Windows 7. I have release 7000 and I have to say that it is SO MUCH better than Vista, although there are a few faults.

I have two installs. One is on a relatively ancient HP Pavilion 740n with a 1.6GHz Pentium 4 and 512MB ram.
The other is a VMware machine on my Apple MacBook 2.0GHz/2.0GB RAM.
Both installs have 30GB disk space.

Gifts for me, Gifts for you: A new year’s resolution.

December 31st, 2008

Well. If I do say so myself, I feel that we did indeed have a very productive Christmas and a very Happy Holiday season. So here I find myself on the eve of the New Year. The last day of the wondiferous 2008. I find myself looking at my stuff. That is all it is really, stuff: But nonetheless I look at it. There is much, much more- click through.

Weekly update

December 29th, 2008

I have not been doing my job. I need writers. I need people with a sense of humor. I have been unable to maintain my posts. I am good for maintenance and a few good articles every few months but for not much more. Do I know you? Do you want to write for me for no pay at all?! Consider it an internship maybe. Learning about the power of publicity. Patrîck. Write an article about club nintendo. Somebody write an article about sonething. This has been me weekly update about the state of decline of this very domain. Later I will write about my recent Ebay purchases. I am a major patron of the worlds largest online purveyor of frivolous junk. I recenty bought a Xanadu record and an Apple 23″ HD cinema display. All for dirt cheap. Dirt. Cheap. But I won. And I am happy with the windorphins. Bye.

Scott.

Go Elf Yourself!

December 22nd, 2008

Thats right! No Profanity, you dirty, dirty mind. I know what you were thinking, and I happen to know that you were incorrect in your assumption. There could be children reading this!!! (In some ways, guilty as charged….) But anyway, NO, I did not make a typo in the title. I was not trying to type “EFF yourself”. But either way, watch the video embedded.

ATT 3G Network Portraying Lackluster Performance?

December 14th, 2008

I personally have had a great experience with my iPhone 3G and ATT’s 3G network, however i find myself expecting more. I can’t tell you why, but i often find myself disappointed with ATT’s network. Don’t get me wrong, It is amazing- however it seems that their 3G network is actually shrinking. When i first purchased my iPhone 3G, I was astounded at the network. It was fast, it was responsive (as in fast) and it was all over. My hometown did not have 3G immediately after my purchased, but shortly following. About a month into the 3G, I came back from vacation (where they have NO service) and found that i was indeed on the coveted 3G network, right there on my own deck. At first it was great, and i was certainly the life of the party, showing off YouTube videos on the fly, pretty much anywhere in this small town. Things started acting up later. I was no longer able to get a dependable 3G signal. My iPhone would fall back to Edge, and to get 3G i would be forced to switch off 3G and then switch it back on.

Other than that, my experience has been excellent. In the past few weeks, i have been experimenting with tethering, VERY lightly (because of the lack of reliable 3G), using PDAnet. I have to commend the people (June Fabrics Tech.) behind that software. I have yet to try Skype video chat or iChat because of, again, the lack of reliable 3G.

If you have had a sour- or otherwise- experience with the ATT 3G network, leave a little comment. It seems that in theory, the iPhone should be capable of much faster speeds.

Thanks for reading- we had approximately a few months of darkness becasue of some issues..
